The internet is abuzz today over President Obama’s announcement that federal appeals court Judge Merrick Garland is his selected nominee to fill the vacancy created on the Supreme Court by the death of Antonin Scalia.
Opinions are flying about his conservative leanings on certain issues and his capabilities as a “consensus builder.” Some speculate that Obama is challenging the GOP-controlled Senate to deny a “moderate” judge the chance to go through the nomination process in a presidential election year.
On the issue of rescheduling cannabis within the Federal Controlled Substances Act, Garland made his thoughts known when the issue came before him several years ago:

Apparently, unbeknownst to Garland, the people making decisions about cannabis rescheduling at the DEA are not scientists; they are unelected bureaucrats that have a vested interest in keeping cannabis completely illegal as it serves to keep their budget numbers high.
Hopefully, Garland has done more research on the other issues brought before him than he did on marijuana rescheduling.
